UE 16 – Numerical tools for planetary science

This teaching unit consists of a one-week intensive course on various aspects of numerical tools. The aim is to give students a practical skilms of the computer tools commonly used in planetology. The teaching load in terms of lectures is very moderate (2 hours per day at most) in order to devote most of the teaching unit time to practical work on machines. The practical work is based solely on current research situations in planetology. Students are encouraged to learn how to use the tools quickly and to show initiative and independence in their work. The module is assessed in the form of a written project report and codes at the end of the week.

The module is organised into three main stages 1. Use of a programming language (Fortran or C type) and numerical diagrams 2. Use of an interpreted language (such as Python or IDL or Matlab) for graphical representation, data processing (minimisation algorithm) and scientific computing (Monte Carlo and statistical schemes). 3.
